Mild eosinophilia: 500 to 1,500 eosinophils/μl. Moderate eosinophilia: 1500 to 5,000 eosinophils/μl. Severe eosinophilia: greater than 5,000 eosinophils/μl Eosinophils in the pathogenesis of allergic airway disease. Cell Mol Life Sci. 2007;64(10):1269-1289.
Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that play an important role in the body's response to allergic reactions, asthma, and infection with parasites.

Rat peripheral blood was stained with CD161 PE (MCA1427) and RT1B A647 (MCA46A647) and gated on lymphocytes to identify NK cells and MHC-II positive cells. Data was acquired on the ZE5 Cell Analyzer. Well, during a major study of people with EoE, the range of cells per hpf were from 15 to just over 100. The majority of them were in the middle around 40-50 eosinophils, with the most severe cases above 100 (max of 109).

Eosinophils are cytologically abnormal From the personal collection of Barbara J. Bain, MBBS, FRACP, FRCPath; used with permission [Citation ends]. Eosinophilic leukaemia [Figure caption and citation for the preceding image starts]: Blood film from a patient with chronic eosinophilic leukaemia resulting from a FIP1L1-PDGFRA fusion gene. Typically levels rise within days, peak during the third or fourth week, then gradually decline over a period of months. Trichinosis is associated with a relative eosinophilia of at least 20%, commonly exceeds 50%, and may reach a maximum of 90%. An absolute eosinophil count of 350 to 3,000/microL is associated with 75% of trichinosis cases.

There was no significant difference among these groups in terms of maximum eosinophil number, biopsy levels with >20 esoinophils/hpf, presence of eosinophilic microabscesses, involvement of surface layers by eosinophils, and severity of basal cell hyperplasia and dilated intercellular spaces. The absolute eosinophil count can be worked out by multiplying the total white blood cell count against the percentage of this count which are also eosinophils.

This means if the white blood cell count is 8000/uL, and 5% of the white blood cells are eosinophils, the absolute count of eosinophils would be 400/uL (8000 x 0.05). The normal range of eosinophils is 0-0.5 x 10^9/L or less than 500 cells per microliter (mL) of blood [ 19 ]. This normally amounts to less than 5% of all your white blood cells. Eosinophils are also involved in many other biological processes, including postpubertal mammary gland development, oestrus cycling, allograft rejection and neoplasia. They have also been implicated in antigen presentation to T cells.
